Abstract
Place and environment specifically determine human identity, and reveal social realities. Events occur there that could not happen elsewhere and people specific to that place live there, and no one else can live there. Due to its suitable climate, the Nakhl wilayah attracted Khalid bin Sulaiman al-Kindi to use it as a backdrop for her novel "The Ghafir ", Thus, the novelist gave his novel a rural touch. This is because he chose the countryside as the setting for his events, and thus the countryside is embodied in its various manifestations and natural, social, cultural, and urban aspects. The research relied on the qualitative content analysis method. The researcher extracted the examples and classified them according to the components that make up identity into three components, which are natural, industrial and human components.
The results are as follows: Nature is revealed in the novel as an influential element of identity. The author used it as the setting for the narrative events. The novelist also represented other influential components in the formation of Omani identity, including natural and man-made components and human components. The state of Nakhl is unfolded to the reader through the activities of its inhabitants and the experiences of the character Salam. This unveils a vivid picture of its shops, mosques, markets, mountains, aflaj (irrigation channels), valleys, and forts. The narrative also delves into the beliefs and lifestyles of the people, offering insights that allow the reader to grasp the essence of the village and its connection to the Omani identity. The novel serves as an anthropological record, capturing the essence of life in Oman’s states before the transformative boom. The novelist utilized events, characters, and the narrator's point of view to infuse the setting with symbolic significance. As a result, the novel took on a poetic quality, embodying the following connotations: Natural elements and describing them in a positive light symbolize a feeling of contentment. The adaptation of Omani villagers to the environment, as well as the artificial components represented in the novel, demonstrate man's talent for creativity and his ability to control the environment. Also, the occupational system indicates that it is more primitive and that the individual is closely connected to nature.
